Pierre Jourdan (SAF) confirmed his place among the top rank of the country's 3-year-olds when edging out hot favourite Galileo's Galaxy (AUS
) in the Gr 3 Tony Ruffel Stakes over 1400m at Turffontein on Tuesday. Echohawk (SAF) and Curved Ball (AUS ) filled the minor placings.

Dream Island showed the way early on from Flybyme, Echohawk and Galileo's Galaxy with Curved Ball and Pierre Jourdan next best. The pacesetter fell away in the straight as Echihawk and Curved Ball moved in but Galileo's Galaxy was travelling well and when he got to the front, he looked well set justify his odds-on status. Pierre Jourdan, however, had other ideas and although he took a while to hit top gear, he closed in resolutely in the last 100m. Galileo's Galaxy tried desperately to hold on but was nailed on the line by Pierre Jourdan.

This was a highly creditable victory as Pierre Jourdan was conceding 2kg to the runner-up. He'd shown that he has a serious finishing kick when landing the Ready To Run Cup last year and this win showed that he also has that will to win that marks out the really good ones. He is going to be a major classic contender for the rest of the season.

Galileo's was suffering his third consecutive defeat and this was really a race he should have won at the weights. Having said that, he's been beaten each time by a really good sort on the day and he will surely be in the winner's box before long.

Echohawk has been making solid progress but needed to prove he could tackle this sort of class. He did so well enough and this bodes well for his feature race aspirations.

Curved Ball hasn't been able to reproduce the sparkle of his Dingaans win in two subsequent starts but he did have to concede weight all round here and is probably best over a mile at this stage. It's much too early to write him off and one can see him quickly bouncing back from this defeat.

Pierre Jourdan (SAF) is a 3-y-o gelding by Parade Leader (USA) out of Vin Fizz by Qui Danzig (USA). He is owned by Messrs E Baisero and G M Alexander and was bred by Summerhill Stud (Pty) Ltd.
