Race Comments: RULE broke alertly, set a moderate pace inside early, shook off a bid from SCHOOLYARD DREAMS after six furlongs then drew off late under left hand pressure. SCHOOLYARD DREAMS angled outside early, raced four wide into the second turn, bid outside the winner after six furlongs but couldn't collar that one then remained close up to the final sixteenth then weakened while saving the place. UPTOWNCHARLYBROWN was void of early speed, looped rivals in the second turn moving to contention then made up some ground outside late. SILVER CRAFT stalked the pace for six furlongs but had no rally. MIDDLE OF THE NITE pressed the pace for six furlongs then came up empty. TRISTEN'S MAMBO saved ground to the second turn then stopped.

Rule reigns in Sam F. Davis with convincing win

Rule extended his winning streak to four and solidified his credentials as a contender for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) with a powerful performance in the $200,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) on Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs.

The Roman Ruler colt set a solid pace in the 1 1/16-mile race for three-year-olds and accelerated clear in the stretch, driving to a three-length score as the even-money favorite under John Velazquez.

Trained by Todd Pletcher for owner-breeder WinStar Farm, Rule has a spot in the Kentucky Derby all but locked up with $570,000 in graded stakes earnings from victories in the Boyd Gaming’s Delta Jackpot Stakes (G3) in December and Sam F. Davis. The Derby field is determined by graded earnings if more than 20 horses are entered.

"It was great first effort for the year; I think he learned a lot. Johnny [Velazquez] was saying that he started looking around when he got to the lead and just messed around a little bit,” said Doug Cauthen, president of WinStar. “He's got the earnings, so [Pletcher] can make a decision that fits the horse. There's no pressure to get any more earnings. The main thing is getting the year off to a good start. It looks like he's progressing physically and so we're happy.”

WinStar boasts a formidable hand for this year’s U.S. classics. In addition to Rule, WinStar has homebred Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) winner Super Saver and highly regarded allowance winner Drosselmeyer with Bill Mott and graded stakes winner American Lion in Southern California with Eoin Harty.

Rule is the first starter out of the Personal Flag mare Rockcide, a half sister to 2003 dual classic winner and champion Funny Cide. He improved to four wins, one second, and one third from six starts and earnings of $716,700.

“Hopefully, he comes back good and Todd and [WinStar Racing Manager] Elliott [Walden] will think about it,” Cauthen said of Rule’s next start. “I know that the Florida Derby (G1) would be one of the options, and obviously coming back here [for the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) on March 13] would be one of the options. But a lot of it would have to do with where our other horses go as well, and just how races shape up and how he's training.”

Rule set a solid pace in the Sam F. Davis, leading five opponents through an opening quarter in :23.71 and a half-mile in :47.72. Middle of the Nite and Schoolyard Dreams kept steady pressure on Rule on the backstretch and far turn, but he had plenty left in the tank entering the stretch. He shook free with an explosive burst of speed and put the race away by the eighth pole.

Schoolyard Dreams finished willingly for second, one-length clear of Pasco Stakes winner Uptowncharlybrown, who rallied from last in the six-horse field as the 3-to-2 second betting choice. Middle of the Nite faded to fifth.

Also on the Tampa card, Lomaki swept to the lead in early stretch and pulled away to win the $125,000 Endeavour Stakes (G3) by two lengths. (video)

Three entrants were scratched from the Endeavour, a 1 1/16-mile race that was contested on yielding turf, and the six-year-old A.P. Indy mare capitalized when she drew in from the also-eligible list. She was rated in fifth by Chris DeCarlo as the 2.60-to-1 favorite and inhaled pacesetter Cure for Sale (Arg) in the stretch to halt a five-race winless stretch.

Lomaki had not visited the winner’s circle since an allowance victory in October 2008 at Woodbine. She completed the distance in 1:46.39 to improve to four wins in 12 starts for trainer Eric Coatrieux and owner Chiefswood Stable.

WinStar Farm’s Rule led at every call and further cemented himself as a legitimate Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) contender with a convincing three-length win in the $225,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes (gr. III) (VIDEO) Feb. 13 at Tampa Bay Downs.

A 3-year-old son of Roman Ruler  , Rule notched his fourth consecutive victory and his third straight stakes score with his front-running effort. The dark bay or brown colt was making his season debut after taking the Delta Jackpot (gr. III) by a neck Dec. 4. He is trained by Todd Pletcher.
After an even break in a field of just six, Rule gained the advantage going into the first turn under John Velazquez and remained on the front end through the backstretch while setting a legitimate pace of :23.71 for the opening quarter and :47.72 for a half-mile. Middle of the Nite and Schoolyard Dreams pressed the pace, while Tristen's Mambo, Silver Craft, and second choice Uptowncharlybrown were farther back.
Rule still led when they approached the final turn, but Schoolyard Dreams made his bid from the outside and took on the even-money favorite as they turned for home. Those two dueled briefly at the top of the lane, but it wasn’t long before Rule began to inch away and by mid-stretch he had put the race away. He stopped the clock in a final time of 1:44.15 for 1 1/16 miles on a fast main track.
Schoolyard Dreams and Cornelio Velasquez were a length ahead of Uptowncharlybrown for second.
“This is a colt with a lot of natural talent and this race will do him a lot of good,” Velazquez said. “I thought the inside was running good today, but I really didn't want him to get away from the field until I was ready. I want him to learn to run with other horses, so when he took that challenge from the outside getting to the turn it was what I wanted. Then I asked him in the turn and he came away nicely and I didn't have to do much with him in the stretch.”
Rule, who is out of the Personal Flag mare Rockcide, has already earned $716,700 from just six starts. His other stakes win came in the one-mile Jean Lafitt back in November at Delta Downs.
“It was a great first start of the year, and we’re excited, because he’s one of several that we hope are going to keep improving,” said WinStar president Doug Cauthen. "We talked about (rating him more) and we hoped that there was going to be a chance and we’d go for it; but he broke and (Velazquez) said if he leads me there, I’ll let him take me."
Rule could be headed to the Florida Derby (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park on March 20 for his final Kentucky Derby prep.
“He’s probably not going to come back for the Tampa Bay Derby; we’re probably going to make his next start in a grade I," Pletcher said. "But I will bring something here (for the grade III Tampa Bay Derby on March 13.)”
The winner paid $4, $2.80, and $2.20. The exacta (1-2) returned $20.60 and the trifecta (1-2-6) was $40.
Silver Craft finished fourth, followed by Middle of the Nite, and Tristen’s Mambo. African Moon was scratched.
