ael Stable’s Lentenor, the full brother to Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Barbaro, was upset by WinStar Farms’ Doubles Partner in a 1 1/8-mile turf allowance at Gulfstream Park Feb. 17 (VIDEO).

Sent off as the 9-10 favorite under John Velazquez, Lentenor raced just off the moderate pace set by Saint Eligius. Those two led the 11-horse field into deep stretch after getting the first three-quarters of a mile in a moderate 1:13.61.

As Lentenor and Saint Eligius engaged in a stretch duel, jockey Chris Decarlo took Doubles Partner to the rail and rode the colt strongly through a narrow hole to snag the victory at odds of 7-1 by a half-length. The final time of 1:48.41 was well off the course record of 1:44 2/5.

Lentenor, who was on the outside of the trio in the stretch battle, finished second, edging Saint Eligius by a neck.

"It’s disappointing," trainer Michael Matz said of Lentenor’s finish. "He broke well. He ran real well. (Jockey) John (Velazquez) said he was just doing some green things, and looking around. The pace was slow, and in hindsight he wishes he would have let him go a little earlier. At the three-eighths pole he would have gone past that other horse (Saint Eligius). He’s green still. He needs that experience."

Lentenor was coming off a 3 1/2-length win over maiden special weight rivals over the Gulfstream turf course going 1 1/16 miles Jan. 20. The son of Dynaformer  --La Ville Rouge (by Carson City) has been in the money in all four of his starts, finishing second twice.

"It’s a good question (where he runs next)," Matz said. "I know he’s definitely the type that can run in the big races, it’s just a matter of timing and whether he can get the experience he needs."

Like Lentenor, Doubles Partner ($17.40) is a Triple Crown nominee and was coming off a maiden turf win. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the colt broke his maiden Nov. 28 in his first grass start and fourth career start. The son of Rock Hard Ten  , purchased for $450,000 at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale, was making his first start since his maiden win.
