Maiden Paddy O’Prado surged clear to a mild upset in the $150,000 Palm Beach Stakes (G3) (video) and Khancord Kid opened a clear lead and held on gamely to win the $150,000 Herecomesthebride Stakes (G3) (video) in a pair of 1 1/8-mile turf stakes for three-year-olds that highlighted the Saturday card at Gulfstream Park.

Donegal Racing’s Paddy O’Prado was sent off as the fifth wagering choice at 7.60-to-1 in the field of nine three-year-olds. His odds reflected the fact that the El Prado (Ire) colt, though still a maiden after four career starts, had finished third to highly regarded Interactif in the With Anticipation Stakes (G3) in September at Saratoga Race Course.

Paddy O’Prado dueled for the lead with Asphalt through a half-mile in :46.56 and six furlongs in 1:10.10. Paddy O’Prado surged clear from the inside in the stretch and drove to a convincing 2 ½-length length victory, covering 1 1/8 miles in 1:45.40 on firm turf.

“There was just one horse [Asphalt] that put a little pressure on him, but my horse was always happy doing it,” winning jockey Jesus Castanon said. “And once the other horse started to back away from him, once my horse felt that he was free, he just took off. He was all business. He galloped out strong and I believe he can go longer than this now.”

Dean’s Kitten finished willingly for second, two lengths clear of third-place finisher Our Champion. Each of the top three top finishers is among the early nominations to the Triple Crown.

Trainer Dale Romans said Paddy O’Prado probably will go to Keeneland Race Course and the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) on April 10 is a possibility for the gray or roan colt.

“I didn’t have any problem running him here as a maiden,” Romans said. “I think he’s as talented as any three-year-old I’ve got in the barn, so why not run him in a Grade 3 for a $150,000 [purse] rather than a maiden worth $50,000?”

Paddy O’Prado, a $105,000 purchase at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale, boosted his earnings to $114,497. Out of the Grade 2-winning Prized mare Fun House, Paddy O’Prado also has one runner-up finish and two thirds from his five starts.

Fillies took center stage in the $150,000 Herecomesthebride Stakes (G3) and Chester and Mary Broman’s homebred Khancord Kid battled tenaciously with Dynazaper for the first mile under Rajiv Maragh before taking the lead for good in the stretch.

Khancord Kid held off a late bid from Apple Charlotte to win by a half-length and secure her first stakes victory. She became the 50th stakes winner for her sire, Lemon Drop Kid, who stands for $35,000 at Lane’s End in Versailles, Kentucky.

Trained by John Kimmel, Khancord Kid covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.14 on firm turf. Kentucky-bred Khancord Kid is out of the unraced Storm Cat mare Confidently, a full sister to stakes winner and sire Yankee Gentleman. She increased her earnings to $146,813 with three wins from six starts.
