Return to sprint puts Cool Bullet in Hansel Stakes winner's circle (3/27/2010)

FLORENCE, KY . . . March 27, 2010 . . . Cool Bullet found the waters a little too deep and the distance a little too far in the Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park last time out, but he relished the return to six furlongs Saturday at Turfway Park, cruising to a 4 1/2-length victory in the $50,000 Hansel Stakes.

The winning time of 1:08.97 was just off the track record of 1:08.03 set by Fatal Bullet in the 2008 Kentucky Cup Sprint. Both speeding 'Bullets' were sired by Red Bullet.

Cool Bullet fought for the lead with Kera's Kitten through an opening quarter mile in :21.61 before taking command and setting the half mile in :44.45. From the top of the stretch to the wire he was on cruise control under jockey Calvin Borel. Strapping Groom gave chase throughout but had to settle for second, and Rockin' Rockstar was nine more lengths back in third.

"He (trainer Steve Margolis) called me and told me he had him ready to run," said Borel. "He ran like much the best today. It looks like he's a real sprinter. Those last races might have been a little long for him. It was a very easy trip. He did it all so easy on his own."

Fourth and following in the Hansel were Lucky Chuck, Kera's Kitten, Plutonium, and Justamatteroftime. Flight was scratched by his trainer.

Sent off the 6-5 favorite, Cool Bullet returned $4.40, $2.80 and $2.20. The gelding now has three wins and a second from seven starts and has earned $94,260 for owners Robert and Lawana Low and Winmore LLC (Dave Williams). The Hansel is his second stakes wins, its trophy added to his sprint stakes win in the Sugar Bowl.
