Touching Beauty makes the grade in Comely Stakes

Gainesway Farm’s and Joseph Cornacchia’s Touching Beauty broke through for a victory in her fourth try in a graded stakes as she charged from just off the pace to post a half-length win in the $100,000 Comely Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct on Saturday.

Anchorage dueled for the lead on the backstretch with Volare Cantare while Touching Beauty tracked from fourth then third through a half-mile. On the turn, Touching Beauty charged past the leaders and dug in through the stretch to secure the victory under Mike Luzzi, crossing the finish line in 1:37.90 for one mile on a track rated as fast.

Speightful Affair finished second, a half-length in front of third-place finisher C C’s Pal.

“My trip was perfect,” Luzzi said. "I got in behind a couple of horses down the backstretch. I didn’t want her to angle out so soon, but I didn’t want her to get trapped, either. She just stayed there and waited for me to call on her, and when I asked her I had a little horse and she finished up nice.”

She’ll Be Doggone, who was making her stakes debut, was the 0.95-to-1 favorite in the field of eight three-year-old fillies but lost any chance when she was checked hard in early stretch by jockey Edgar Prado and bumped the rail as Anchorage came off the rail then angled back in. Prado’s mount almost went down, but he managed to stay aboard as the Gone West filly faded to finish a distant seventh.

Trained by Jimmy Jerkens, Touching Beauty increased her career earnings to $181,450 with her third win from seven starts.
