Yoshimi Ichikawa’s Victoire Pisa earned his first win at the highest level and extended his winning streak to five with a convincing victory as the 2.30-to-1 favorite in the Satsuki Sho (Jpn-G1) (Japanese Two Thousand Guineas) on Sunday at Nakayama Racecourse.

The Neo Universe colt entered off a half-length win in his season debut and classic prep race, the Hochi Hai Yayoi Sho (Jpn-G2) on March 7. Trained by Katsuhiko Sumii, Victoire Pisa closed from well off the pace under Yasunari Iwata in the 18-horse field and seized command with about 100 meters remaining in the 2,000-meter (9.94-furlong) race.

Victoire Pisa shook clear late to prevail by 1 1/2 lengths in 2:00.80 on turf rated as good, giving jockey Iwata his second straight win in the classic. Last year’s winner, Unrivaled, also is sired by Neo Universe, who won the Satsuki Sho and Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) during his 2003 champion three-year-old male campaign.

Hiruno d’Amour nipped Eishin Flash by a nose with champion Rose Kingdom another nose back in fourth as the 6.40-to-1 second betting choice.

In winning the Satsuki Sho, Victoire Pisa avenged his only career defeat, a runner-up finish by three-quarters of a length in his career debut to eventual champion two-year-old male Rose Kingdom.

Bred in Japan by Shadai Farm, Victoire Pisa is out of Irish classic-placed multiple group stakes winner Whitewater Affair, by Machiavellian. Victoire Pisa is a half brother to 2005 Yasuda Kinen (Jpn-G1) winner Asakusa Den’en and stakes winner Swift Current.

Victoire Pisa wins the Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas)(G1)

http://japanracing.jp/_news2010/100418.html

Yutaka Take, still in hospital as a result of his fall last month that led to a broken vertebrae and collar bone and severe bruising of his body, said through his Web site earlier in the week that he believed Victoire Pisa was good enough to win the Japanese Triple Crown. That's saying a lot

Victoire Pisa certainly didn't disappoint the only jockey he had known on Sunday afternoon.

The Katsuhiko Sumii-trained favorite won the 70th Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) in convincing fashion, beating sixth choice Hiruno d'Amour by a length and a half under pinch-hitter Yasunari Iwata for his fifth consecutive victory after losing his debut on Oct. 25.

Victoire Pisa's winning time of 2 minutes 8 seconds over the 2,000 meters was way off the race record of 1 minute, 58.5 seconds set by No Reason in 2002. The going at Nakayama Racecourse was listed as good, but looked and felt heavier in actuality, according to Iwata who won the race for the second straight year. In 2009, Iwata won the first jewel in the Triple Crown aboard Unrivaled.

Sunday's was the first Satsuki Sho victory for Sumii, who already had the last two legs of the Triple Crown to his credit. The trainer won the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) with the recently retired Vodka and the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger) with former Melbourne Cup winner Delta Blues.

“From riding today, I thought the outside lanes were a lot wetter than the inside,” Iwata said. “So I wanted to go inside and things worked out as I had hoped.

“I was thinking about how to ride him all day, and I thought going inside would give us the best chance to win the race. Having said that, he has the ability to take off from any position and I'm just fortunate to have been on a horse of such quality. The going hasn't been very good from yesterday, but he handled it without any problems.”

Said Sumii, winner of several Grade 1 titles including the Japan Cup, the Japan Cup Dirt and the Hong Kong Mile: “I'm absolutely thrilled and relieved at the same time he won because we have great expectations from this horse. I don't think I could ask for more from him right now. We'll be going straight to the Derby from here.”

Trailing runnerup Hiruno d'Amour by a nose was 11th pick Eishin Flash, ridden by the Japan Racing Association's 2009 leading jockey Hiroyuki Uchida. Second favorite Rose Kingdom, the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes winner who dealt Victoire Pisa his only defeat to date back in October, took fourth with the Norihiro Yokoyama-ridden Aliseo filling out the board.

Coming off victory in the March 7 Hochi Hai Yayoi Sho – also held at Nakayama over 2,000 meters – Victoire Pisa, by former Satsuki Sho champion Neo Universe out of Whitewater Affair, traveled toward the rear of a pack led by Birdie Birdie and brought up by Tosen Ares, both long-shots in the full field of 18.

Victoire Pisa showed zero signs of stress as he kept up with what turned out to be a relatively gentle pace – 1 minute 7 seconds through the first five furlongs – and when Iwata pushed him forward rounding the next-to-last turn, the colt responded with enthusiasm, gaining fast on the leaders with each step.

On the short Nakayama home stretch of more than 300 meters, Iwata found a free lane along the railing and guided Victoire Pisa into the opening. After that, there was no stopping him as he pulled away from the opposition with each stride. Hiruno d'Amour and Eishin Flash came up strong, but didn't prove to be much of a contest for the new Satsuki Sho champion.

Iwata credited Take – who is expected to be back in the saddle for the May 30 Tokyo Yushun at Tokyo – for schooling Victoire Pisa through the first five starts, and seemed relieved to have come through in place of the superstar jockey.

“It was a privilege to be on a horse of his class,” Iwata said. “I have to thank the owner and the stable staff for giving me such an opportunity. He's such an easy ride, just as I expected him to be. He's intelligent, and Yutaka-san had already taught him the ABCs of racing and that's what led to the result today.

“I was more than aware of the pressure on me, and I wanted to beat it. I think he'll only get better from here, and you can only pray that nothing bad happens to him before the Derby.”

It marked the second straight year a Neo Universe son won the Satsuki Sho. Victoire Pisa, bred at the Shadai Farm and owned by Yoshimi Ichikawa, collected 97 million yen for his first Grade 1 victory, taking his earnings to more than 240 million yen.
