Race Comments: SHOTGUN GULCH behind the pace five wide into the turn, four wide out to lose some ground, straightened for home, steady gain, got up last jump. DECELERATOR in the second flight while between foes, bid outside the leader when straightened for home, missed while again between foes in the final strides. COSMO GIRL broke well, shook clear into the turn, continued to show the way into the stretch, proved stubborn to the end while closest to the inside. VERTICAL VISION evenly paced toward the inside, came out slightly, brushed, continued evenly to the finish in lacking a late kick. ENTICING GIRL lacked speed, moved outside for the drive, came up empty. RAPID RACER forwardly placed for a half, backed up through the stretch. CROSSFIREHURRICANE brief speed, bit rank turn, finished before a half.

Shotgun Gulch Nose Best in Dixie Belle

C.R. Trout's Shotgun Gulch stalked the pacesetters, then uncorked an extended rally to just get up and nip Westrock Stable's 6-5 favorite Decelerator in the final stride, to take the $50,000 Dixie Belle Stakes, the opening day feature of the 2010 Oaklawn Park Live Racing Season.

An enthusiastic crowd of 20,311, up from the 15,863 of 2009, witnessed a spirited stretch drive, with the six panels completed in 1:13 1/5.  Jockey Luis Quinonez, who had ridden the three-year-old daughter of Thunder Gulch to victory in the Oklahoma Classic Lassie Stakes in November was tabbed to ride again on Friday by trainer Kim Ewing and rewarded the conditioner with her first-ever Oaklawn stakes win.

The win took Shotgun Gulch's career mark to four wins from five tries, her only loss over the turf at Retama Park in the La Senorita.  In post-race interviews Ewing suggested that she was inclined to try to stretch out the distances for Shotgun Gulch, with the most likely spot being the $75,000 Martha Washington Stakes at one mile on Saturday, February 13.
