Champion Special Duty was awarded the victory in the Stanjames.com One Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) on Sunday at Newmarket after stewards disqualified Jacqueline Quest.
Jacqueline Quest and Special Duty dueled through a thrilling final furlong with the former lugging out under Tom Queally. Jacqueline Quest crossed the finish line a nose in front, but the celebration of her owner Noel Martin was short-lived as stewards disqualified the 66-to-1 longshot.
"They took the race away from me,” Martin, a quadriplegic who lost the use of his limbs after a neo-Nazi attack in Germany in 1996, told England’s Press Association. “She is still Jacqueline Quest and they cannot take that away from me and she was still first past the post.
"I have not seen a race taken away in British horseracing since God knows when, but I have been through a lot of bad luck so it is not a problem. I thought these things only happen in France.
"I have been in bed for 4 1/2 years and had to buy her from my bed. I named her after my wife who died three years after I was paralyzed by the neo-Nazis."
The English Guineas disqualification was the first since Nureyev was taken down in the 1980 Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1), won by Known Fact.
The final time for one mile on good to soft turf was 1:39.66 on the straight Rowley Mile.
"When you've got such a short distance between two horses you have to make a decision,” William Nunneley, stipendiary steward at Newmarket, told Racing Post. "When you look at how Jacqueline Quest drifts right-handed and they've touched, Tom Queally has his whip in his left hand and didn't pull it through, it wasn't too difficult a decision—they've gone almost halfway across the track."
Special Duty, who entered off a runner-up finish in the Prix Imprudence (Fr-G3) on April 8, gave trainer Criquette Head-Maarek her fourth One Thousand Guineas win. She also won the classic with Ma Biche (1983), Ravinella (‘88), and Hatoof (‘92).
Special Duty won the Electrolux Cheveley Park Stakes (Eng-G1) and Prix Robert Papin (Fr-G2) at two and now adds a classic win to her record for owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah. The Hennessy filly improved to three wins in six starts.
Special Duty is out of the Distant View mare Quest to Peak, a full sister to seven-time Grade 1 winner Sightseek and a half sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Tates Creek.
Special Duty was reserved early near the grandstand rail by Stephane Pasquier as the 17-horse field broke off into two groups. Sent From Heaven took command early as the group traveling near the rail steadily pulled away from the contenders racing in the middle of the course.
Jacqueline Quest took over with about a furlong remaining and Special Duty accelerated to challenge, briefly pushing her head in front. Jacqueline Quest lugged out through the closing strides, carrying Special Duty with her, which stewards ruled compromised the champion’s chances.
Head-Maarek said Pasquier thought Special Duty would have prevailed with a clear path to the finish line.
"[Stephane] Pasquier thought that if the horse had not come across then he would have won. Her heart is bigger than herself—it's incredible,” Head-Maarek told Racing Post. “I didn't think [the bump] was that bad watching it live but then I saw the replay and I thought we had a chance."
Head-Maarek said Special Duty could move on to the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Fr-G1) (French One Thousand Guineas) on May 16 at Longchamp. She also said she felt for Martin and Jacqueline Quest’s trainer, Henry Cecil, who was denied his 25th classic win.
“I feel very sorry for the others because for a while they thought they had the race."
