Soneva wins the Cape Verdi

The third meeting of the 2010 Dubai International Racing Carnival at Meydan, kindly sponsored by Al Tayer Motors, was highlighted by the Group Three Cape Verdi Stakes, a 1600m turf contest for fillies and mares. It was won by Soneva for trainer Marco Botti with Christophe Soumillon doing the steering.

The jockey said: "She is a nice filly who I used to ride in France. That was a nice performance."

The second grass race, a 1600m handicap, was won in style by Snaafy under Richard Hills for trainer Musabah Al Muhairi. It was the horse's first run since the 2009 Dubai World Cup and the horse could have a different big night target this year according to Hills: "He is a much improved horse and that gives us plenty of options. The 1800m of the Dubai Duty Free would really suit him."

There was a double on the night for Godolphin trainer Saeed Bin Suroor with Ahmed Ajtebi in the saddle on both Allybar over 2000m and Anmar over 2200m. Both handicaps were run on the Tapeta. The jockey said: "It has been a good night and it is great to ride my first Meydan winners."

Also in double form was Doug Watson whose Force Freeze won the 1200m Tapeta conditions race under Tadhg O'Shea half an hour before stable companion Barbecue Eddie routed his opponents in a 1400m Tapeta handicap under an inspired ride by William Supple who made every yard of the running.

Watson said: "We thought both would run well and Force Freeze is a horse we really have high hopes of. Willie (Supple) has stolen that race on Barbecue – it was a great ride."

Last year's UAE 1000 Guineas heroine So Shiny landed the opening 1200m Tapeta handicap under Olivier Peslier who said: "She is a naturally speedy filly and battles hard."

The concluding 1m1/2f Tapeta handicap was won by William Buick on the Dhruba Selvaratnam-trained Kal Barg whom he produced fast and late to deny Godolphin's Espiritu.

Soneva takes Cape Verdi at Meydan

Multiple French Group 3 winner Soneva held off a late charge from Aspectoflove to score a neck victory in the $200,000 Cape Verdi (UAE-G3) on Friday at Meydan Racecourse.

Ridden precisely by Christophe Soumillon, the four-year-old Cherokee Run filly covered 1,600 meters (7.95 furlongs) in 1:38.40 on turf rated as firm.

The victory was the first Dubai International Racing Carnival triumph for trainer Marco Botti and the second Cape Verdi score for Soumillon, who won the 2007 running aboard Sanaya.

“She is a nice filly, who I obviously know from France,” the jockey said. “She had some very good form to her name and was fifth in the French One Thousand Guineas [Fr-G1]. Hopefully, she can build on this.”

Synergy finished third, 1¼ lengths behind Irish stakes winner Aspectoflove.

In the other turf race on Friday, Shadwell Farm homebred Group 3 winner Snaafy returned from an 11-month layoff to score a 1¼-length victory in a 1,600-meter (7.95-furlong) event under Richard Hills for trainer Musabah Al Muhairi.

It was the first start for the six-year-old Kingmambo horse since he finished seventh in the 2009 Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1).

Hills said the horse, who won last year’s Intidab Burj Nahaar (UAE-G3) at Nad al Sheba Racecourse, may show up on this year’s Dubai World Cup card with a different target in mind.

"He is a much improved horse and that gives us plenty of options,” he said. “The 1,800 meters of the Dubai Duty Free [UAE-G1] would really suit him."
