Also on the card at Caulfield, Starspangledbanner delivered in a thrilling finish in the $361,157 Sportingbet Oakleigh Plate (Aus-G1), completing 1,100 meters (5.47 furlongs) in 1:03.16 to win by a nose from Here De Angels and Arinos, who finished in a dead heat for second.
The Oakleigh Plate was Starspangledbanner’s penultimate start for the partnership that has raced him since he began his career in October 2008 with trainer Leon Cortsens.
The three-year-old Choisir colt was purchased privately by Michael Tabor and partners of Coolmore and raced in Tabor’s colors, but the partnership negotiated in the deal that they would be permitted to race him in the Coolmoore Lightning Stakes (Aus-G1), Oakleigh Plate, and Newmarket Handicap (Aus-G1) on March 6 at Flemington and keep the prize money before he is shipped to Europe.
''We did a deal and it went very close to the wire as to whether he'd run in the Lightning Stakes. It's all worked out well and he's a terrific colt,'' Coolmore representative Michael Kirwan told The Age. ''They're a really excitable group and I'm just so happy for them. They're good owners, they have a good horse, and they enjoy themselves completely; it's terrific.''
Starspangledbanner improved to six wins in 11 starts with the Oakleigh Plate win and earned his second win at the highest level.
While Starspangledbanner gave his owners reason to celebrate, 2007-’08 Australian Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler came out of the race lame and left his connections with a difficult decision regarding his racing future. The seven-time Group 1 winner was making his first start in more than a year for trainer Ross McDonald.
“He ran good, but he's pulled up a little bit sore and he'll probably go out now,” McDonald said. “We'll give him six months and give him another try and if not, then we'll retire him.”
Highly regarded Australian classics contender Denman improved to nine wins in 11 starts with a 3 1/4-length win in the D’Urban Autumn Stakes (Aus-G2), completing 1,400 meters (6.96 furlongs) in 1:23.38.
Banner flies again in Group 1 at Caulfield

The winner’s circle erupted at Caulfield on Saturday when glamour colt Starspangledbanner reclaimed his shine with victory in the $400,000 Sportingbet Oakleigh Plate (1100m).
The second Group 1 win of his career came three weeks after he finished out of a place in the Coolmore Lightning Stakes (1000m, Group 1) at Flemington when favourite.
That defeat came 24 hours after Coolmore's decision to purchase the three-year-old for a reported $10 million and the knockers were quick to emerge.
Troy Corstens, representing his father, trainer Leon Corstens, said that fitness was the key on that occasion and that the stable were expecting an improved placing in the Oakleigh Plate.
“I wasn't disappointed with his run in the Lightning. I thought he did a fantastic job....it's just been a matter of getting him fit,” he explained.
“I still think there's a bit of improvement with fitness still, he's just done so well this preparation, and I think in the Newmarket you'll see a better horse again.”
Corstens said the victory was a great advertisement for the industry with Starspangledbanner set to continue his career in the UK under the guidance of Aidan O'Brien following the $1m Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on Super Saturday, 6 March.
“It's great to do this for Coolmore, it's great to do this for our owners and it's great for the industry. It's a good result for everyone,” he declared.
Corstens promised a more aggressive ride at Thursday's pre-race media conference and jockey Danny Nikolic obliged firing Starspangledbanner out to challenge for the early lead.
He dropped into the one-one upon settling and exploded from the trail to gain what looked a winning break early in the straight.
The horse's condition gave out over the latter stages, but he was able to hold off outsider Arinos ($51) and track record holder Here De Angels ($6) who dead-heated for second a short-head back.
“I was very happy in the run,” Nikolic said. “I got onto Avenue's back for about a furlong and was able to get a little breather into the headwind.”
“When I let him roll up around the turn he gave me that winning feeling, but he still peaked at the 100 (metres) so there's a fair bit of improvement there.
“I was little bit worried, he put up the white flag, but he'll come on from that run. He's a big colt, a big bull and he's still fat inside.”
While the connections of Starspangledbanner were celebrating a number of the beaten brigade were licking their wounds with Weekend Hussler, Lucky Secret and Avenue all pulling up lame.
