Report:
Germany, Saturday 3.30pm BST
Dusseldorf: German 1,000 Guineas (Group 3) 1m, 3yo fillies

THE Stan Moore-trained Kinky Afro put up a sound effort for a horse with a handicap mark of just 83 when finishing fifth, beaten little more than two lengths by Kali (Waldemar Hickst/Adrie de Vries), in the Group 2 German 1000 Guineas at Dusseldorf on Saturday.

Kinky Afro raced in midfield and came under pressure as soon as the field entered the short home straight.

She responded gamely to jockey Liam Keniry's urgings and, despite not having a great deal of racing room, was still in with a chance of a place until the final 50 yards.

Moore said: "She ran a really good race and was only beaten a length for second place. She's had a couple of hard races now so deserves a break.

"When we bring her back we may step her up to a mile and a quarter."

Kali was in the first two throughout and, driven into the lead with a furlong and a half to run, held off another filly that raced prominently, Reine Heureuse, by a length and a quarter with the favourite Neon Light, a neck adrift in third.

Returned a 104-10 chance, Kali is a home-bred daughter of Areion owned by Gestut Park Wiedingen.

The same trainer/owner/breeder combination was also responsible for the 41-1 chance, Prakasa, who finished best of all to take fourth.

Hickst said: "I was confident that Kali would run a big race as she is a tremendously improved filly. I doubt she will get further than a mile given her pedigree."

De Vries, the 13-time Dutch champion jockey, has been riding in Qatar.

"I nearly missed out on this because of the volcanic ash," he revealed.

"I have been trying to get back to Europe for two weeks but only arrived in Germany yesterday."
