Race Comments: JODY SLEW devoid speed, moved up after entering the second turn, swung widest for the drive, drifted in while rallying outside BELLA MEDAGLIA and prevailed. BELLA MEDAGLIA inside to nearing the drive, advanced for the drive, angled out then came in and was out kicked. TIDAL POOL settled off the rail, rallied four wide nearing the drive, loomed outside ELUSIVE JOZI, steadied a sixteenth out and then weakened. ELUSIVE JOZI vied early, got clear down the backstretch, got headed inside the furlong grounds and then faltered. QUIET TEMPER within striking distance, bid three wide nearing the drive, then flattened out. JACKPOT JOANIE well back to the drive, was no real threat. SHEER BEAUTY vied for the lead to the drive, then gave way. RED HOT BUDDHA forwardly placed to the drive, dropped back. |

Martin Racing Stable LLC & Dan Morgan’s Jody Slew, the longest shot in a field of eight 3-year-old fillies, surprised her connections as much as bettors when she prevailed by a half-length over Coteau Grove Farms LLC’s Bella Medaglia in Saturday’s $75,000 Tiffany Lass Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
The Tiffany Lass, at one mile and 40 yards, is the first in a series of three races for fillies that culminates with the Grade II Fair Grounds Oaks on March 26.
Jody Slew, making her first start for trainer Bret Calhoun, raced toward the rear of the field early on. Sheer Beauty led through the early stages, setting the opening quarter-mile fraction of 23.13 before ceding the lead to Elusive Jozi, who raced a half-mile in 46.02 and three-quarters in 1:12.07.
Jockey Miguel Mena and Jody Slew moved up entering the far turn and came into the stretch widest of all with more than 10 lengths to make up. As the early leaders tired several fillies were in with a chance, but Jody Slew continued to rally and got up in the final sixteenth while drifting out before the wire.
“She broke out of the gate awkwardly so I had to take back and save,” Mena said. “When I asked her to move she responded and came flying.”
The final time was 1:40.84 and Jody Slew paid $48.60, $21.80 and $15.60. Bella Medaglia, who paid $5 and $4.20, also gained ground in the stretch but was outkicked by the winner. Four lengths back in third was Westrock Stables LLC’s Tidal Pool, who paid $8.60.
“We thought we were buying a grass filly off her race at Churchill (a third in the Nov. 28 $61,000 Caressing Stakes at one mile on turf) but we haven’t been able to find a grass race for her,” said winning co-owner Bill Martin. “We put her in here to keep her fit so this was a pleasant surprise.”
Calhoun was perhaps not as surprised as everyone else, having been impressed by Jody Slew’s breezes on the main track since arriving at his barn.
“A lot of horses that are straight grass horses won’t handle the track at all the way it’s been with the weather, which is pretty deep and loose,” Calhoun said. “I breeze a lot of horses here and the last couple times I’ve breezed her, she breezes as good as or better than any of them. In the mornings when she’s gathered up she’s got that high action that looks like turf but today she was jumping a long way.”
Elusive Jozi held on for fourth, while odds-on favorite Quiet Temper, in striking position into the stretch, came up empty.
“She was well-placed throughout,” Quiet Temper’s jockey Robby Albarado said. “When I asked her for run she had already conceded. No excuses. I am sure she’s a better filly than this.”
Trainer Dale Romans said, “We were chasing an awful fast pace and, I don’t know, I’ll go back to the barn and check her out.”
The order of finish was completed by Jackpot Joanie, Sheer Beauty and Red Hot Buddha.
The next major race for fillies on the Road to the Oaks is the Grade III Silverbulletday Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on Feb. 20.
Full Stakes Quotes—Race 8—$75,000 Tiffany Lass Stakes
3-year-old fillies, One mile and 40 yards, 18th running
Jockey Miguel Mena (Jody Slew, winner): “She broke out the gate awkwardly so I had to take back and save. When I asked her to move she responded and came flying.”
Trainer Bret Calhoun (Jody Slew, winner): “Mr. Martin purchased her privately and we decided not to take her to Gulfstream (for last weekend’s $100,000 Sweetest Chant for 3-year-old fillies at one mile on turf) and keep her here and we wanted to keep her fit until the next grass race comes along. This really is her first two-turn race on the dirt so it looks like she is good on the dirt, too.
“It looked like she broke hard and Miguel grabbed her and she was in the race, and then she fell back, and then she won.
“We bought her off some nice (Ragozin) numbers. She was wide on both turns in her first grass race and it was also her first two-turn race. When she got here she breezed good for us. A lot of horses that are straight grass horses won’t handle the track at all the way it’s been with the weather, which is pretty deep and loose. I breeze a lot of horses here and the last couple times I’ve breezed her, she breezes as good as or better than any of them.
“In the mornings when she’s gathered up she’s got that high action that looks like turf but today she was jumping a long way.”
Owner Bill Martin (Jody Slew, winner): “We thought we were buying a grass filly off her race at Churchill but we haven’t been able to find a grass race for her. We put her in here to keep her fit so this was a pleasant surprise.”
Trainer Glenn Delahoussaye (Bella Medaglia, second): “As easy as Quiet Temper beat us last time we weren’t going to commit suicide by trying to go out there and hook her. Today we wanted everybody else to do the dirty work and we would try to pick up the pieces. It almost worked.”
Jockey John Jacinto (Tidal Pool, third): “It looked like the outside horse came over a little bit. She ran big and gave me a hundred-percent. She did what she could.”
Jockey Robby Albarado (Quiet Temper, fifth as odds-on favorite): “She was well-placed throughout. When I asked her for run she had already conceded. No excuses. I am sure she’s a better filly than this.”
Trainer Dale Romans (Quiet Temper, fifth as odds-on favorite): “We were chasing an awful fast pace and, I don’t know, I’ll go back to the barn and check her out.”
When she came back to be unsaddled did she look OK? “She was traveling fine and no excuses. I’ll just go back to the barn and check her out.”
Trainer Steve Margolis (Visavis, morning line second choice, scratched): “She was cast in her stall a few days ago and I think she bumped her right hip. The past one-and-a-half days she’s been a little body sore. She still went to the track in the mornings. It’s not anything serious and she’ll live to fight again.”
