Race Comments: DRYFLY away in good order, controlled the pace toward the inside while comfortably in hand, larger lead into the lane while continuing to save some ground, maintained a comfortable advantage to the wire under steady handling. PLEASANT STORM last away, unhurried, continued to trail backstretch, moved out a bit to be four wide second turn, roused for the drive, finished up willingly to be clear for the place. KITTY'S TURN void of early foot, swung out to be five wide turning for home, also was going well at the end. CRIDER allowed to settle off the pace and the inside, went evenly through the stretch while not posing a serious threat. DON'T PUT IT BACK five wide into the first turn, continued to race forwardly, called on for some run turning for home, lacked a closing response. PRODUCTIVE ENVOY lacked speed, continued to race well back second turn, displayed some mild, belated interest. BEWARE THE TIGER off the pace into the first turn, fell back in some traffic late in the first turn, made little impact thereafter. WOW WOW WOW six wide into the first turn, prompted the issue while moved down to four wide backstretch into the far turn, gave way before entering the stretch. KING SNAKE was not a factor. PERFECT DRIVE pressured the winner for five furlongs and gave way. WILDCAT NATION within striking distance, gave way in the second turn. PRINCE ROONEY stopped in the drive.

In a race featuring several early 2010 Triple Crown prospects and named after a past Kentucky Derby (gr. I) victor, Dryfly, a bay gelding by Jump Start   emerged the decisive winner.

In front-running fashion, Dryfly captured the Jan. 18 Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park by 2 1/4 lengths over Pleasant Storm, and in the process stamped himself as one of the ones to watch along the Kentucky Derby Trail.

Breaking from Post 4 under last year’s Derby-winning jockey Calvin Borel, Dryfly zoomed to the front and never relinquished his lead in the one-mile dirt contest. Clicking off fractions of :47.65, 1:13.75, and 1:27.70, he completed the distance in 1:41.69.

The Smarty Jones winner is trained by Lynn Whiting, who won the 1992 Kentucky Derby with Lil E. Tee.  Charles Cella, the owner of Oaklawn Park, owns Dryfly.

Dryfly has now won three of four starts, for earnings of $114,840. The gelding broke his maiden at first asking last September at Philadephia Park, and prior to the Smarty Jones, he won an allowance contest in November at Churchill Downs.

The Smarty Jones winner was bred in Kentucky by Mineola Farm II and is out of the Topsider mare Creeksider. Dryfly returned $5.20, $3.60, and $3.00; Pleasant Storm paid $8 to place and $4.80 to show. Third-place finisher Kitty's Turn paid $4. The 4-9 exacta paid $43.
