Race Comments: PAPA CLEM stalked a bit off the rail, bid outside the runner-up on the backstretch and second turn, drifted out a bit into the stretch while taking the advantage, drifted in some in the drive and gamely prevailed under some urging and strong handling. SMART BID sped to the early lead, set the pace inside then dueled inside the winner, came out a bit into the stretch, fought back and angled inward in the stretch and continued willingly to the wire. RENDEZVOUS stalked inside then a bit off the rail, went between horses on the second turn, continued off the rail into the stretch and bested the others. VISCOUNT chased along the inside then between horses, continued outside a rival on the second turn and could not offer the needed late kick. MYTHICAL POWER stalked outside then alongside a rival, went three deep on the second turn and into the stretch and lacked the needed rally. MR. HOT STUFF angled in and saved ground, moved up inside on the backstretch and into the second turn, continued along the rail on that turn and could not summon the necessary response in the stretch. GALLANT SON broke a bit slowly, settled outside a rival then a bit off the rail, angled in on the second turn, came out into the stretch and was not a threat. QUINDICI MAN chased outside then alongside a rival, went three deep on the backstretch and second turn, came four wide into the stretch and did not rally.

Favored Papa Clem seized the lead from pacesetter Smart Bid in the stretch and held off his rival through the lane to score a hard-fought half-length win in the $150,000 San Fernando Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Jan. 16 (VIDEO) .

Fourth-place finisher in last year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), the millionaire Papa Clem gained his first victory since capturing the Arkansas Derby (gr. II) last spring for owner/breeder Bo Hirsch and trainer Gary Stute. The son of Smart Strike   had dropped six races in a row.

“I was a little nervous (watching the stretch run), just because he doesn’t remind me of a horse that’s going to open up on them," Stute said. "I was afraid somebody that he wouldn’t see might come get him late. But he showed a lot of heart, so I was really happy."

With Tyler Baze in the irons, Papa Clem and Smart Bid turned the San Fernando into a two-horse race in the homestretch, battling all the way to the wire. Papa Clem inched away in the final strides to win the 1 1/16-mile test of 4-year-olds in a so-so 1:42.64 over the Pro-ride main track. The San Fernando is the second leg of Santa Anita's Strub series.

Smart Bid, who led comfortably for Mike Smith while carving easy quarter-mile fractions of :24.18 :48.74 and 1:13.12, came under pressure from Papa Clem on the final turn. Papa Clem, who tracked in second all the way around, took the lead at the head of the stretch but couldn't separate from Smart Bid, who clung stubbornly close along the inside all the way to the last jumps before the wire. Papa Clem, who drifted in a bit in the drive, won under strong handling from Baze.

“I rode my horse with a lot of confidence," Baze said. "I didn’t want to get in a speed duel with Mike around the first turn because we would have just killed each other off.

"I lost this horse last year when I broke my shoulder and it’s a blessing to get back on him. He’s so game and you can so anything with him. Now, it’s on to the Strub.”

The others in the field of eight failed to menace the leaders in the stretch. The stalking Rendezvous closed up well enough to land third with Rafael Bejarano aboard, 1 1/4 lengths behind the runner-up. Viscountrallied for fourth.

Papa Clem ran third in the opening-day Malibu Stakes (gr. I), the first leg of the Strub series that served as a solid prep for his San Fernando effort following a 3 1/2-month layoff. The final race of the series, the Strub Stakes for 4-year-olds at nine furlongs, is Feb. 6.

Stute said Papa Clem would probably run in the Strub next, "We’ll see about Dubai or the Big ’Cap after that.”

Out of Miss Houdini, by Belong to Me  , the Kentucky-bred Papa Clem improved his career mark to 3-2-2 in 13 starts while banking $1,121,190. The San Fernando victory was worth $90,000.

Papa Clem carried co-top weight of 120 pounds and paid $5, $3 and $2.60. Stakes winner Smart Bid, who ran seventh in the Malibu for trainer Graham Motion, returned $5.80 and $4.60 in an improved effort. He completed a $25.80 exacta. Rendezvous, winner of the Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT) on turf in September, was $4 to show.

It was 1 1/4 lengths to Viscount in fourth. Then came Mythical Power, Mr. Hot Stuff, Gallant Son and Quindici Man.

Grade II winner Papa Clem has been retired from racing due to an ankle injury and will stand at stud in 2010, according to owner/breeder Bo Hirsch and trainer Gary Stute.

The son of Smart Strike   most recently won the Jan. 16 San Fernando Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park in his 4-year-old debut.

Stute said the injury was due to the “erosion of the left front sesamoid. The vet said that turning him out wouldn’t help (the injury), so we decided to retire him.”

Stute noted that following the San Fernando, Papa Clem’s ankle looked slightly swollen, so he decided to have x-rays taken, after which he discovered the injury.

“I’ve experienced many disappointments, but this hurt a lot,” said Stute. "I thought he would win the Strub Stakes (gr. II) and have a good chance in the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I).”

Hirsch said he has been talking with his bloodstock agent Kathy Berkey about possible options of where to stand Papa Clem this year.

“We’re open to anybody…we’re just trying to find out what’s best for Papa Clem,” said Hirsch. “(The injury) is disappointing, because he was doing so well; he was back to his old self. I was hoping he would make it through a 4-year-old campaign, but that’s the business—you have to take the highs with the lows.”

Papa Clem, who finished fourth in the 2009 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), but had been winless in six starts leading up to the San Fernando, put himself back on the radar when he captured the latter race by a half-length.

The bay colt won the 2009 Arkansas Derby (gr. II) and placed in four other stakes that year, including the Dec. 26 Malibu (gr. I). He retires from racing with a lifetime record of 3-2-2 from 13 starts, for earnings of $1,121,190.

Hirsch named Papa Clem after his late father Clement L. Hirsch. A successful owner and breeder in California for about 40 years, the elder Hirsch was instrumental in the establishment of the Oak Tree Racing Association.

Clement Hirsch bought Papa Clem’s second dam, Magical Maiden, for $26,000 at the 1991 California March 2-year-old sale, and the daughter of Lord Avie wound up winning or placing in 17 stakes during her 26-start career. Among her victories were the 1991 Hollywood Starlet Stakes and 1992 Las Virgenes Stakes (both gr. I).

As a broodmare, Magical Maiden produced Miss Houdini, a grade I-winning daughter of Belong to Me who later became the dam of Papa Clem.

While racing for Hirsch, a native of Pacific Palisades, Calif., Miss Houdini captured the 2002 Del Mar Debutante Stakes (gr. I) during her short, four-start career. Hirsch had bought Miss Houdini, along with a few other mares from his father’s estate when he died in 2000.

In keeping with the all-in-the-family connections, Figonero, Magical Maiden, and Miss Houdini were all trained by Warren Stute, the late uncle of Gary Stute.

“Breeding-wise, (Papa Clem) is very special,” said Hirsch. “He has a lot of potential to offer (as a stallion).”
