Gold Trail opened a commanding lead in the straight on Friday at Ellerslie in the $145,120 Blandford Lodge Railway Handicap (NZ-G1) and he needed every inch of that advantage in the closing strides to hold off fast-finishing Atapi by a head.

Michael Rodd guided the Hussonet gelding right to the lead in the 1,200-meter (5.97-furlong) race and he looked home free in the straight after surging away from Richard Beymer and Kiloton. But Atapi shifted gear from the outside and rolled into contention with an explosive burst of speed before running out of real estate.

Trainer Gary Portelli said he expected Gold Trail would be tested in the stretch.

''That last 50 meters was always going to be tough and we were waiting to see if something would come out and challenge him,'' Rodd told the Sydney Morning Herald. “Our horse toughed it out from a wide draw and a bit of weight, so he really deserved it.”

Gold Trail, making his first start outside of Australia, completed the distance in 1:09.34 on turf rated as good to improve to seven wins in 23 starts. Out of the stakes-winning Danewin mare Trail Of Gold, Gold Trail locked up his first win at the highest level and posted his third stakes win for owners Glenn and Lisa Morton.

Multiple Group 1-placed stakes winner Atapi was 3¼ lengths clear of Richard Beymer.
