Vonusti closed with a sustained charge from the far outside and surged clear to a two-length win in the $710,600 Oaks Stud Telegraph Handicap (NZ-G1) on Saturday at Trentham.

The five-year-old Ustinov gelding secured his first career stakes win and improved to eight wins in 18 starts for owners Phillip O’Shea, Tom O’Shea, and Ramesh Patel. Phillip O’Shea was working on a construction project in London and returned to New Zealand to watch the race.

“I still can’t believe it. It seems totally surreal. It’s like winning lotto,” he told www.thoroughbrednews.com.au/nz. “I’m working as a builder for my old boss back in Hawera and thought I might wait until this race before deciding what I’m up to, but I’m going on holiday now.”

Vonusti entered off a convincing win at 1,400 meters (6.96 furlongs) on January 2 at Tauranga for trainers Tim and Margaret Carter. He was reserved in second to last in the 16-horse field on Saturday and lengthened stride when angled wide by jockey Noel Harris to win easily, completing 1,200 meters (5.97 furlongs) in 1:09.36 on rain-soaked turf rated as dead.

“He didn’t travel that good, but I knew his capabilities, knew he was the goods, and thought he could pick them up,” Harris said of Vonusti, who is out of the Sound Reason mare Sound Approach. “I’ve thought since the first time I rode this horse that I would stick with him. It’s magic to win a Group 1, any race is good.

“I’ve always thought this horse could be anything, and there’s plenty more in store.”

Tootsie edged Stupendous by a neck for second with Kiloton another head back in fourth.
