Report: Ascot, Wednesday
Moss Bros Sagaro Stakes (Group 3) 2m, 4yo+

ILLUSTRIOUS BLUE (16-1) gave William Knight a big-race double on the card whenswooping late to claim long-time leader Aajel (13-2) on his first try at the two-mile trip.

The seven-year-old was recording his second Group 3 success, after victory at Goodwood last summer, and completed a quickfire double for the trainer following King Of Dixie's Listed win in the previous race, the Paradise Stakes.

Jim Crowley had been prominent throughout on King Of Dixie, but he was content to drop into last place from the off, as Aajel was sent on early by Martin Dwyer.

The field were tightly clustered off a steady pace with a circuit left to run but, as they went down the far side of the course, Richard Hills pulled out 9-2 favourite Akmal and moved up into second, with Yes Mr President in third.

With six furlongs left, Dwyer increased the pace with Akmal and Hills happy to continue in behind, and the pair remained in the front two berths swinging off the final bend.

It appeared that Akmal was the biggest danger, but he folded tamely when asked for a race-winning effort, with Electrolyser coming out of the pack to challenge.

However, down the wide outside Crowley was making rapid headway on Illustrious Blue to cut down the leader, and got in front inside the final furlong to score.

The gallant Aajel held on to second, with Electrolyser (15-2) third.

Knight said: "I wish all days could be like this. To have a double at Ascot with Group 3and Listed wins - it doesn't get much better than that.

"He [Illustrious Blue] has slightly surprised me today, but we always said we would give two miles a try and we thought we may as well try it at the start of the season.

"He is in the Yorkshire Cup and that could be the right place to go now."
