French invader Makfi achieved classic success in only his third career start as he inhaled game runner-up Dick Turpin in the closing strides for a clear win in the $661,960 Stanjames.com Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) on Saturday at Newmarket.
The 33-to-1 outsider was unbeaten but lightly raced entering the straight one-mile race on the Rowley Mile. The Dubawi colt punched his Two Thousand Guineas ticket with a dominant three-length victory in the Prix Djebel (Fr-G3) on April 8 at Maisons-Laffitte and proved that win was no fluke with another smashing win.
Trained by Mikel Delzangles, a former assistant to Alain Royer-Dupre, for owner Mathieu Offenstadt, Makfi finished 1 1/4 lengths clear of Dick Turpin, covering the mile on turf rated as good in 1:36.35.
"It's amazing,” Delzangles told England’s Press Association. “We were waiting for the Djebel to see what happened, but we already had an idea we might come here.
"I hoped he would run very well as he was in great form and won his trial. There was no reason why he wouldn't run well.”
From the first crop of 2005 Boylesports Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1) winner Dubawi, who stands for about $30,599 (20,000 British pounds) at Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket, Makfi is the first starter produced by the Green Desert mare Dhelaal, a half sister to 1995 European champion two-year-old male Alhaarth.
His second dam, Irish Valley, by Irish River (Fr), is a half sister to French classic winner and sire Green Dancer.
"He is a very quiet and well-behaved horse and he can quicken,” Delzangles said. “We weren't really worried about the ground and he's proved he's a very good horse. He is very easy—you just need to be on him and he does the rest.”
Jockey Christophe Lemaire reserved Makfi in midpack in the 19-horse field and the colt responded when roused with a powerful burst of speed with about three-eighths of a mile remaining, just as Dick Turpin launched his bid to take command.
Dick Turpin, who entered off a win in the Bathwick Tyres Greenham Stakes (Eng-G3) on April 17 at Newbury, shook free and appeared poised for classic glory but he could not match strides with the winner in the final furlong.
Dick Turpin held off third-place finisher and stablemate Canford Cliffs by a half-length for second. European champion two-year-old male St Nicholas Abbey, who entered the race with three wins from as many starts, disappointed with a sixth-place finish as the even-money favorite.
Lemaire said he was confident in Makfi’s chances near the midpoint of the race, and the bay colt came through with a big performance.
Delzangles said Makfi could be pointed to the St. James’s Palace Stakes (Eng-G1) at the Royal Ascot meeting. He also said there is a chance he could come back in 15 days for the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Fr-G1) (French Two Thousand Guineas) at Longchamp.
"I sat behind Johnny Murtagh [on St Nicholas Abbey] in the early part of the race and I was happy with my position,” Lemaire told England’s Press Association. “At the three-furlong marker, I could see that Johnny wasn't traveling very well compared to my horse, and I started to think I could win the race.
“When the gap appeared he accelerated very well—he put his neck down and was very strong. He hasn't got a lot of experience and he can improve a little bit more.”
Trainer Richard Hannon was pleased with both Dick Turpin and Canford Cliffs, who probably will be pointed to the St. James’s Palace.
"I am delighted really,” he told Racing Post after taking two of the top three spots. “The ground probably did for Canford and [jockey Richard Hughes] said he would not lengthen going into the dip. However, he stayed the mile and he will probably go to Ascot next for the St. James’s Palace Stakes.
"Dick Turpin ran a fine race and ran pound to pound with Canford Cliffs, based on their Newbury running. He will go for the Irish [Two Thousand] Guineas (Ire-G1) I would think. What is going to beat him there?”
St Nicholas Abbey’s trainer, Aidan O’Brien, made no excuses for the Montjeu (Ire) colt, whom he expects to continue to develop this season.
“Listen, it just didn't happen today, but he's a horse for the future," O’Brien told Racing Post.
Also on the card, Group 1 winner Jukebox Jury prevailed as the favorite in the Stanjames.com Jockey Club Stakes (Eng-G2).
Group 1 winner Equiano set the pace and held off multiple Group 1 winner Borderlescott by three-quarters of a length to win the Stanjames.com Palace House Stakes (Eng-G3).
