Joy and Fun for trainer Cruz in Al Quoz Sprint

Joy and Fun took over with about 100 meters left to run and edged away to a three-quarter-length victory in the inaugural Emirates NBD Al Quoz Sprint (UAE-G3), the first of seven Thoroughbred races on Saturday’s $26.25-million Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) card at Meydan Racecourse.

The seven-year-old Cullen gelding snapped a seven-start winless stretch since a stakes victory in June in Hong Kong for owners Mr. and Mrs. Wong Chun Nam and trainer Derek Cruz.

“I haven’t got the words to describe it, hardly,” Cruz said. “I feel really, really proud.”

Joy and Fun picked up his third career stakes win by outfinishing American sprinter California Flag, who led most of the way before weakening late and finishing third behind Godolphin’s multiple Group 2 winner Fravashi.

Joy and Fun had not finished in the top three in any of his three starts this year. His last placing was a third-place finish in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint (HK-G1) on December 13.

Two of his starts during the losing skid were won by two-time Hong Kong champion sprinter Sacred Kingdom.

“That was great,” said jockey Brett Doyle, who has ridden the horse in seven of his last nine starts. “The horse deserved it as he’s bumped into Sacred Kingdom a number of times.”

Joy and Fun covered 1,200 meters (5.97 furlongs) in 1:09.80 on firm turf.

“There’s no straight six furlongs [in Hong Kong], and that’s what he needs. The trainer chose the right race,” Doyle said. “He stays 1,400 meters, and he outstayed the American horse.”

Fravashi and jockey Ahmed Ajtebi, who won the third race aboard Godolphin’s Calming Influence, edged an obviously tired California Flag.

“He broke well and he relaxed; he just got outrun in the end,” jockey Joe Talamo said of California Flag. “They just outquickened him in the final sixteenth.”

Joy and Fun improved to ten wins from 39 starts and boosted his earnings to $1,919,714 in five racing seasons.

Joy And Fun kicked off Dubai World Cup night for Hong Kong with an impressive win in the 1200m Group 3 Al Quoz Sprint. Confidently ridden by Brett Doyle, the Derek Cruz trained six-year-old, fifth in the Hong Kong Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize at Sha Tin in his most recent outing, broke very fast and sat throughout on the tail of the front running American, Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint champion California Flag, before cutting him down at the 200m mark, then running on strongly to hold off the Godolphin challenger Fravashi.

''It wasn't the plan to be so prominent with him,'' a thrilled Doyle explained. ''But he pinged out and was travelling so well. I had to leave him where he was happy. Then the American horse seemed to tire earlier than I expected. So I went for him, and he responded really well. He's more of a 1400m horse at home, and I guess that helped him stay on best to the line. It's been a brilliant training performance by Derek too, as the horse looked a picture and ran accordingly.''

Cruz was equally excited. ''I don't really have the words for this,'' he exclaimed. ''Oh it's awesome. It's great for the team and it's such a great feeling to win overseas for Hong Kong in such an amazing place as this.''

''This result says a lot about Hong Kong sprinters,'' said Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. ''They are always so competitive not just at home but throughout the world, and this proves the point again. I am delighted for Derek Cruz, for Brett Doyle and for Joy And Fun's owners, Mr and Mrs Johnny Wong Chun Nam, because it's terrific for Hong Kong to win on such a huge stage with the world watching. I feel very proud.''

Joy And Fun has an ambitious overseas programme pencilled in for him after this resounding victory - the second for a Hong Kong horse at the world's richest race meeting following Vengeance Of Rain's triumph in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic: ''We'll probably go to Singapore (for the Group 1 KrisFlyer International Sprint) after this,' said Cruz. 'And we'll think about running him at Royal Ascot too because he travels so well and takes everything in his stride.''

One World, representing trainer John Moore and jockey Darren Beadman, also gave Hong Kong fans reason for pride when running a game third in the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen behind American Sprinter Kinsale King and Singapore champion Rocket Man, who until last night's narrow defeat had tasted defeat only once -  behind world top-rated turf sprinter Sacred Kingdom in the 2009 KrisFlyer International Sprint.

One World appeared to suffer a slight check 600m out when going for a gap, without which he might have finished even closer than the two and a half lengths by which he was beaten.

''I was where I wanted to be three-back on the rails,'' said jockey Darren Beadman. ''But at the 600m the winner leaned in on Rocket Man and that made me snatch up a bit. Still, I thought I could get to him in the straight, but while he gave his all as he usually does, it was just not good enough. But you'd still have to be very happy with the run and he was only beaten by two very good sprinters.''

Hong Kong's Good Ba Ba failed to fire in the Dubai Duty Free, appearing to run a little flat in what is, jointly with the Dubai Sheema Classic, the world's second richest turf race. The great miler eventually finished midfield in eighth place.

Jockey Weichong Marwing was a little puzzled by his run: ''He was a bit slowly out and he got back as he always does. But there wasn't much pace in the race, as we'd feared, and he never really got into it. I don't think he was that comfortable among horses either - he is better coming around runners but I was trapped on the rail from the low draw.''

Hong Kong sprinter Joy And Fun (Yellow silks), trained by Derek Cruz and ridden by Brett Doyle, edges home runner Fravashi (Navy silks) to win the Al Quoz Sprint (Group 3, 1,200m), at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai today.
Mr & Mrs Johnny Wong Chun Nam (2nd and 3rd from left), Owner of Joy And Fun, winning trainer Derek Cruz (2nd from right) and jockey Brett Doyle (1st from right), receive the winners' trophy at the Al Quoz Sprint trophy presentation ceremony.
