Calming Influence takes Godolphin Mile

Jockey Ahmed Ajtebi continued his string of strong performances on Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) day as he piloted Godolphin’s Calming Influence to a one-length victory in the $1-million Etisalat Godolphin Mile (UAE-G2) on Saturday at Meydan Racecourse.

Ajtebi burst onto the world stage during last year’s World Cup card, sweeping the two $5-million turf races—the Dubai Duty Free (UAE-G1) aboard Gladiatorus and the Dubai Sheema Classic (UAE-G1) aboard Eastern Anthem.

Calming Influence’s Godolphin Mile victory also was a milestone for trainer Mahmoud al Zarooni, who ran horses in his name under the Godolphin banner for the first time on Saturday after being elevated to head trainer along with Saeed bin Suroor earlier in the week.

Zarooni, 33, had been an assistant to Suroor for more than a year and previously worked for local trainer Ali Rashid al Raihe. He was scheduled to saddle seven horses on Saturday, including Maktoum Challenge-Round 2 (UAE-G3) winner Allybar, who finished third in the $10-million Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup.

Le Drakkar and Calming Influence dueled for the lead through much of the trip before the five-year-old King’s Best horse asserted himself and powered to the finish line, covering 1,600 meters (7.95 furlongs) in 1:36.57.

“I’m so happy to win for [Zarooni],” a jubilant Ajtebi said. “I’ve been with him for five years.”

Moshin al Tajir’s multiple group stakes-placed winner Green Coast finished a game second, a length in front of Godolphin’s lightly raced Skysurfers. Godolphin’s Grade 2 winner Desert Party, 14th last year in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and the even-money favorite for the Godolphin Mile, finished 11th of 14 under Frankie Dettori.

“I had a bad run and was never in the race,” Dettori said.

Calming Influence was winless last year in three starts but had runner-up finishes in two handicap races in January and early February 2009 during the Dubai International Racing Carnival.

Following a fourth-place finish in a 1,600-meter race on February 26, he was sidelined for the rest of the year and did not return until February 5 of this year, when he finished fourth in his first start off the long layoff.

He moved forward to win a 1,600-meter handicap in his next start on February 18 prior to a third-place finish in the Derrinstown Stud Alhaarth Burj Nahar (UAE-G3) in his final Godolphin Mile prep on Super Thursday.

“He’s gotten better with each race,” Ajtebi said. “He showed tonight that he finally is back in his top form.”

A half brother to Grade 2 winner Steel Light, Calming Influence has won five of 14 starts and earned $850,301. He is out of the winning Indian Ridge mare Idilic Calm (Ire).
