Kinsale King, Gomez stellar in Golden Shaheen

California-based sprinter Kinsale King and jockey Garrett Gomez executed a perfect stalking trip along the backstretch of Meydan Racecourse before taking command midway through the far turn and accelerating to an impressive half-length win over Singapore-based Rocket Man in the $2-million Gulf News Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1) on Saturday.

The five-year-old Yankee Victor gelding, who entered the Golden Shaheen following consecutive wins in the Vernon O. Underwood Stakes (G3) in December at Hollywood Park and the Palos Verdes Handicap (G2) in January at Santa Anita Park, elevated his game to an unprecedented level against an accomplished international field.

Kinsale King gave 2008 Eclipse Award winner Gomez his second career victory in Dubai following Spring At Last’s win in the 2007 Etisalat Godolphin Mile (UAE-G2). Trained by Carl O’Callaghan, Kinsale covered 1,200 meters (5.97 furlongs) in 1:10.89 on Meydan’s synthetic Tapeta Footings surface.

“It’s just amazing,” O’Callaghan said. “The horse has always proven to me that he’s just a grinder and he keeps trying no matter what position I put him in. I wasn’t too worried about my company, with this horse I never get too worried about who is in the race against me.”

Kinsale King broke well from post seven and quickly settled just to the outside of pacesetting Japanese multiple Group 1 winner Laurel Guerreiro. As the race developed, Gomez kept Kinsale King to Laurel Guerreiro’s right flank and would not allow Rocket Man, a confirmed front-runner who had won eight of nine races in his career on the lead, to join the top pair.

Kinsale King maintained his position into the far turn and, upon Gomez’s cue, moved past Laurel Guerreiro to take the lead entering Meydan’s long stretch. Under steady urging, Kinsale King powered through the final 100 meters and withstood a strong challenge from Rocket Man, who found his best stride too late.

Hong Kong-based One World finished third, two lengths behind Rocket Man. Grade 1 winner Gayego never threatened and finished eighth in the ten-horse field.

Kinsale King improved his career record to five wins in seven starts on Saturday and inflated his earnings to $1,407,080 with the $1.2-million Golden Shaheen winner’s share. Bred in Kentucky by Marvin Little Jr., he is one of five winners from six starters out of the unraced Woodman mare Flaming Mirage.

“It’s absolutely amazing, I mean this is what I’ve always wanted to do with my life,” said O’Callaghan, who entered the race with only eight official victories, according to Jockey Club statistics. “Back in [Los Angeles], you’re training every day against some of the top trainers in the country. But to come out here and prove that this is what I want to do for a living and I can do it, hopefully just opens up more doors for me.”

In 1990, O'Callaghan traveled from his native Ireland to New York and gained valuable experience working for trainer John Kimmel for seven years, and then for trainer Todd Pletcher for another seven years before settling in California three years ago.

Kinsale King will be pointed to the Golden Jubilee Stakes (Eng-G1) at the Royal Ascot meeting in June.

Darren Beadman's mount, One World (No 1) - the Hong Kong contender in the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen - snatches a close third in this 1,200m race at Meydan Racecourse today. American runner Kinsale King (No 7) and Singapore sprinter Rocket Man finish first and second in this US$2 million event.
