Multiple Group 1-winning mare Dar Re Mi (GB) bested a superb international field of turf stayers on Saturday in the Guangsha Group Dubai Sheema Classic (UAE-G1) at Meydan Racecourse.

Ridden by William Buick, Dar Re Mi mounted a furious rally in the final 100 meters to take the lead and held off Japanese champion Buena Vista nearing the finish for a career-defining three-quarter-length victory.

Making her first start since finishing third in the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) on November 7 at Santa Anita Park’s Oak Tree meeting for trainer John Gosden, Dar Re Mi showed no rust from the layoff in the Sheema Classic. The five-year-old Singspiel (Ire) mare covered 2,410 meters (11.98 furlongs) in 2:31.84 on turf rated as good, giving the accomplished Gosden his first career Dubai stakes win.

Presious Passion, the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf runner-up and an American fan favorite, assumed his customary position alone in front of the 16-horse field through the first 1,000 meters, followed by Golden Sword and Jukebox Jury (Ire).

Presious Passion began to tire on the final turn but remained in contention before stopping in early stretch. English Group 3 winner Golden Sword inherited the lead with about 100 meters remaining, but he too quickly faded as a group of contenders from midpack accelerated to the front from the middle of Meydan’s straight, led by Dar Re Mi.

In a thrilling finish, Dar Re Mi had enough in reserve to first turn back a challenge from Group 1 winner Spanish Moon along the inside and then deny 2009 Oka Sho (Japanese One Thousand Guineas) and Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) winner Buena Vista nearing the wire.

“It doesn’t get any better, does it?,” Buick said. "Dar Re Mi gave me so much confidence. … When I went for [the lead], she found another gear every furlong. She kept picking up for me all the way.”

Buena Vista held off Spanish Moon by a head for second, and multiple group stakes winner Deem closed well to finish fourth. Eastern Anthem, winner of last year’s Sheema Classic, and three-time Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) runner-up Youmzain never threatened while finishing sixth and eighth, respectively. Presious Passion faded to finish last.

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber's Dar Re Mi enjoyed a top-flight 2009 campaign, annexing wins in the Audi Pretty Polly Stakes (Ire-G1) and the Darley Yorkshire Oaks (Eng-G1). She also finished first in the Qatar Prix Vermeille (Fr-G1) but was disqualified in a controversial decision. She concluded her 2009 campaign with an impressive third-place finish under Frankie Dettori in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

The Sheema Classic marked the first Group 1 start for Buick as Gosden’s stable rider. Following the race, Gosden expressed satisfaction with his jockey’s patience.

“You know with an American horse [Presious Passion] you’ll get a proper pace,” Gosden said. “William sat chilly at the top of the lane—it’s a long straight here, you don’t want to be in a big hurry—and he timed it to perfection. Well done to him, and an outstanding performance by the filly.”

Dar Re Mi improved her career record to six wins in 16 starts with her lucrative victory in the Sheema Classic and boosted her earnings to $4,318,308. The regally-bred Dar Re Mi is out of the Group 1 winning Top Ville mare Darara (Ire). She is a half sister to Hong Kong champion Diaghilev and Group 1 winner Darazari.
