Trainer Mike de Kock saddled the top two finishers in the $2 million UAE Derby (UAE-II) March 27 at Meydan Racecourse, with favored Musir outlasting filly Raihana by 1 3/4 lengths on Dubai World Cup night.

Both Musir and Raihana were bred in Australia by their owner, Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum, and both are 4-year-olds. Godolphin’s Mendip, the Al Bastakiya Stakes winner last month at Meydan, finished third.
Musir was ridden to victory by Christophe Soumillon, who had to guide his mount from last, closing ground along the rail in deep stretch to pass both Raihana and Mendip. The final time for about 1 3/16 miles on Tapeta was 1:57.44.
The winner is by Redoute's Choice  , out of the Encosta de Lago mare Dizzy De Lago. It was the fifth UAE Derby win for de Kock.
Musir improved to 5-1-0 from six lifetime starts. He is undefeated in three starts this year, having won all three at Meydan. The bay colt raced for de Kock in South Africa in 2009, winning the group I Golden Horseshoe Stakes last July.
Raihana was entering off a victory in the UAE Oaks Feb. 25 at Meydan. She is a daughter of Elusive Quality  .
Irish-bred Timely Jazz had to be pulled up after breaking down heading into the final turn.
The UAE Derby was open to 3-year-olds from the Northern Hemisphere and 4-year-olds from the Southern Hemisphere.
Musir paid $5.40 to win.

Musir leads home one-two finish for de Kock in UAE Derby

Musir unleashed a powerful rally in the stretch to lead home a one-two finish for trainer Mike de Kock in the $2-million S & M al Naboodah Group United Arab Emirates Derby (UAE-G2) on Saturday at Meydan Racecourse.

The Southern Hemisphere three-year-old colt was angled to the inside by jockey Christophe Soumillon and accelerated explosively in the final 200 meters to overhaul stablemate Raihana and Godolphin Racing’s previously unbeaten Mendip for a 1 3/4-length victory.

South Africa’s 2008-’09 champion two-year-old male won for the fifth time in six career starts and boosted his bankroll to $1,427,301 for owner-breeder Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum.

“It’s a fantastic result for Sheikh Mohammed [bin Khalifa al Maktoum], first and second and he bred them himself. It’s huge,” de Kock said. “I said before that this was a very, very good horse, and I hope he’ll go very well in Australia.”

The Redoute’s Choice colt won the Zulu Kingdom Explorer Golden Horseshoe (SAf-G1) in July 2009 and entered off a dominant 3 1/4-length victory in the Shadwell Estate United Arab Emirates Two Thousand Guineas (UAE-G3) on February 18 at Meydan.

Raihana and Mendip stalked pacesetter Solid Choice, while Soumillon reserved Musir in last in the 1,900-meter (9.44 furlong) classic. Approaching the stretch, the field scattered when Timely Jazz was injured and quickly pulled up.

Mendip surged ahead to take command with about 400 meters remaining and soon was joined by Raihana, an Elusive Quality filly who won the Meydan United Arab Emirates Oaks. The two battled gamely toward the finish line but were no match for Musir in the final 100 meters.

“The race worked out for me as I was able to sit behind the good horses and he proved himself very courageous in the straight,” Soumillon said of Musir. “He had to go through the gap and finished like a really good horse.”

Musir covered the distance in 1:57.44 on the synthetic Tapeta Footings surface. Bred in Australia, Musir is out of the Encosta de Lago mare Dizzy de Lago.

Raihana was 1 1/4 lengths clear of Mendip, who is a candidate for the U.S. classics. Mendip’s $200,000 in group stakes earnings could be enough to earn him a starting spot in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) on May 1. The field for the first jewel of the Triple Crown is limited to 20 starters with preference given to horses with the highest career earnings in group or graded stakes.

“We had a mix-up around the turn when that horse [Timely Jazz] broke down so we had to take evasive action,” said Frankie Dettori, Mendip’s jockey. “He ran an honest race and I’m pleased with him. He was beaten by two nice horses.”
