Al Shemali scores stunner in Dubai Duty Free

Al Shemali turned in a true stunner on the Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) card when he scored at 145.10-to-1 odds in the $5-million Dubai Duty Free (UAE-G1) on Saturday at Meydan Racecourse.

Winning trainer Ali Al Raihe, however, is very familiar with the winner’s circle as he entered the day with a one-win lead in the United Arab Emirates trainer’s standings and he cemented the leading trainer title with an incredible upset win in the Duty Free on the final live racing date in the country.

The six-year-old Medicean horse won a handicap race on the main track at Meydan on February 19 and entered off a sixth-place finish, beaten by less than three lengths, in the Derrinstown Stud Al Maktoum Challenge-Round 3 (UAE-G3) on March 4 on the synthetic Tapeta Footings surface. But Al Shemali had not won on the grass since January 2008.

Al Shemali tracked from midpack under Royston Ffrench as Tam Lin (GB) set the pace with multiple Grade 1 winner Take the Points applying pressure from second. Grade 2 winner Courageous Cat and Grade 1 winner The Usual Q. T. also were close to the pace as the U.S. contingent was prominent in the early going.

Take the Points took over from Tam Lin approaching the stretch in the 1,800-meter (8.95-furlong) race while Ffrench waited behind traffic aboard Al Shemali.

Ffrench found running room on the outside and Al Shemali inhaled Take the Points, Courageous Cat, and The Usual Q. T. with a powerful bid and surged well clear. Bankable closed with a rush but never seriously threatened the victor, who won by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:50.84 on firm turf.

Bankable was 3 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Imbongi, who was followed by The Usual Q. T. and Take the Points. Courageous Cat faded to ninth in the 16-horse field. Favored Presvis was trapped behind a wall of horses in the stretch and lost all chance when checked in tight quarters. He finished 11th.

Al Shemali improved to four wins in 18 starts and significantly boosted his bankroll to $3,242,235 with the $3-million winner’s share. A half brother to multiple group stakes winner Tungsten Strike, Al Shemali is out of stakes-placed winner Bathilde (Ire), by Generous.
