Report: Leopardstown, Sunday
Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes (Group 3)
7f, 3yo, fillies

THE Paul Deegan-trained Lady Springbank  earned herself a crack at Classic glory after impressing in the 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown on Sunday.

Lady Springbank, who runs in the colours of Mark Gittins, will be aimed at the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh on May 23 after beating Duchess Of Foxland by a length and a half. She does not hold any entries in the British Classics.

"This was the plan, if she was ready, and now it's onto the Irish Guineas," Deegan said.

"She's a high-class filly with serious crusing speed. The faster they go the better.

"She would not want it too soft, but the extra furlong won't be a problem."

Ridden by Jim Crowley, Lady Springbank, who won the Group 3 CL Weld Park Stakes at the Curragh last year, travelled strongly on the heels of Queen Of Troy and 2-1 favourite Famous, two of four Aidan O'Brien-trained runners, and picked up smartly when asked the question to score at 8-1.

Crowley was equally enthusiastic about Lady Springback's future and when asked if her next race should be a Group 1, he replied: "Without a doubt. I was very taken with her and she loved the ground.

"They went a nice, even gallop andI was always confident about the trip as she stays well."

Duchess Of Foxland and Crystal Gal - second and third at 10-1 respectively - ran on from the rear, while the field was reduced to 11 runners, following What About Me's withdrawal at the starting stalls. There was no rule 4 deduction.

Johnny Murtagh felt tenth-placed Famous, a sister to last year's Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Mastercraftsman, may have been undone by the ground.

He said: “They might have gone a bit fast for her and she just got tired on me in that ground when we turned into the straight.”

Her stablemate and ante-post Investec Oaks favourite You'll Be Mine finished was a place ahead in ninth.

Jockey Seamie Heffernan said: “They went a good gallop but the ground was sticky and I felt my filly ran well and just got a bit tired in it. I’d expect her to improve a lot from the run.”
