Kargali upsets former stablemate Rayeni

Report: Curragh, Sunday
www.thetote.com Gladness Stakes (Group 3) 7f, 4yo+

KARGALI caused a minor upset at the Curragh on Sunday when he beat former stablemate and 6-4 favourite Rayeni in the Group 3 Gladness Stakes.

Trainer Luke Comer purchased the 10-1 winner out of John Oxx's yard for €51,000 in November and this proved the money was well spent.

Racing in the colours of Comer's wife Margaret, Kargali quickened smartly to reel in Rayeni - second in last year's Irish 2,000 Guineas - and land the spoils under Johnny Murtagh.

That pair had benefited from a decent gallop set byJumbajukiba, who won the race in 2008, with Libano, representing last year's winning connections of Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen, close by.

As the frontrunner's challenge ended, Rayeni moved through to take things up, but the switched-on Murtagh responded instinctively and his mount found more.

The Liam McAteer-trained Croisultan rattled home to claim third.

Representing Comer, Paul Kinane said: "Kargali's had his problems, but has started to turn the corner.

"The boys in the yeard have done a great job with him, but there's no plan until we see how he comes out of the race. We'll just try and keep him sound."

Oxx added of the Aga Khan-owned Rayeni: "He was a bit keen early on and that probably didn't help him on that ground."
