Puncher Clynch knocks off Ballydoyle opponents in Ballysax

http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/international-news/2010/April/18/Puncher-Clynch-knocks-off-Ballydoyle-opponents-in-Ballysax.aspx

After winning his season debut, Puncher Clynch stepped up to stakes company on Sunday at Leopardstown and defeated a pair of highly regarded three-year-olds from the Ballydoyle yard of Aidan O’Brien in the P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes (Ire-G3).

Trained by Jim Bolger, the Azamour (Ire) colt was never far back of pacesetter At First Sight, who was ridden by Seamus Heffernan for O’Brien. Puncher Clynch responded when asked by jockey Kevin Manning and accelerated to take command with about a quarter-mile left in the 1 1/4-mile race.

At First Sight battled gamely through the final furlong, where he was joined by Group 1-placed stakes winner and stablemate Mikhail Glinka and several other challengers. Puncher Clynch was fully extended to outlast the opposition, winning by a nose while covering the distance in 2:08.10 on turf rated as good.

At First Sight edged Mikhail Glinka, runner-up in the 2009 Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Fr-G1), by a neck for second.

Famous Warrior was fourth, followed by Address Unknown, who was checked in tight quarters with two furlongs left and could not find running room in the straight.

Report: Leopardstown, Sunday

PW McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes (Group 3)
1m2f, 3yo

PUNCHER CLYNCH edged out both Aidan O'Brien's Ballysax Stakes runners, At First Sight and Mikhail Glinka, in a messy renewal of the Group 3.

The Jim Bolger-trained son of Azamour wrestled the initiative from At First Sight, the supposed Ballydoyle second-string, straightening up for home and kept finding more for jockey Kevin Manning to post a narrow victory for owners Ennistown Stud at odds of 12-1.

The winner was made to pull out all the stops as At First Sight, who ran a creditable race in second at 10-1, attempted to regain the lead, and a number of runners laid down their challenge as the field bunched up at the two-furlong pole.

The hard luck story of the race was the sweet-travelling Address Unknown, who was denied a clear run up the rail, while 11-10 favourite Mikhail Glinka lost his position down the back straight before staying on in eyecatching fashion in third.

Onlookers hoping to glean clues from the Classic trial, previously won by Derby and Irish Derby winners Galileo and High Chaparral, may feel slightly short-changed at the way the race panned out.

Bolger said of the winner: "He's not ready to cope with real Group 1 horses and we'll probably keep him the level below that for the time being. I'm not sure about plans, I may give him an easy week or two."

William Hill left Mikhail Glinka unchanged at 33-1 for the Derby.
