ANNA SALAI, racing in Godolphin's France colours, swooped late to claim the honours in the Prix De La Grotte with even-money favourite Rosanara only third.

The Dubawi filly was a maiden going into the French 1,000 Guineas trial, but showed an impressive turn of foot at the furlong pole to win going away for trainer Andre Fabre.

All eyes were on Rosanara, who was bidding to extend the Aga Khan's record of three wins from the last four runnings of this Group 3, but although she briefly hit the front two furlongs out, it was clear she was a sittingduck for a fast-finisher coming off the pace.

Two horses came through the pack, with Gotlandia looking a serious threat to the leader, but the 50-1 outsider could not match the staying prowess of Anna Salai, who returned the 11-1 winner with British bookmakers.

Although connections need to discuss Anna Salai's next target, the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches [French 1,000 Guineas] on May 16 will surely come into calculations, particularly as the three-year-old had afar from trouble-free passage and still managed to stamp her class on the field.

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: "It's very pleasing and was a great performance - it's also great for Dubawi."

Winning jockey Maxime Guyon added: "She showed a terrific turn of foot and there's plenty of room for improvement."

Gerald Mosse, rider of Rosanara, said: "She lacked a bit of condition and needed a breather in the straight."
