Report:
France, Saturday
Saint-Cloud: Prix du Muguet (Group 2) 1m, 4yo+

ANDRE FABRE'S purple patch in French Group races continued on Saturday when Byword (Maxime Guyon) just got the better of a fierce battle with Gris De Gris to take the Prix de Muguet at Saint-Cloud.

Classic winners Elusive Wave and Silver Frost, who took last year's Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and Poulains respectively, both finishedout of the frame in this Group 2 contest.

Khalid Abdullah's Byword was sent off at 16-5 (just over 3-1) on the pari-mutuel as he dropped back down in trip after winning a Listed race at Maisons-Laffitte.

The son ofPeintre Celebre tracked front-running favourite Gris De Gris throughout the mile contest before the pair fought a ding-dong battle for the final two furlongs.

Gris De Gris looked set to score a furlong out but Byword, who holds the Prince of Wales's Stakes entry, just got his nose in front where it mattered to score by a short head over a game opponent.

Winning jockey Maxime Guyon said: "I tried to cover him up early on but couldn't. He was very courageous andhas certainly made a lot of progress."

Byword is now likely to run in the Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan later this month.

Gris De Gris, who won the Muguet in 2008, has now been runner-up two years in a row.

Trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre said: "The winner was the horse to beat and it would have been easier for Gris De Gris if the two horses hadn't been so close to each other in the final stages."

A further length and a half back in third was German-trained Sehrezad, but neither Elusive Wave nor Silver Frost ever looked likely to land a blow after racing towards the rear.

Considering it was her first run for eight months, Pouliches winner Elusive Wave was not disgraced in fifth place.

Elusive Wave's owner Martin Schwartz had come over from Florida to see the race and his racing manager Michel Zerolo said: "We were really quite happy with her effort and don't forget it was her reappearance after a long layoff.

"She also didn't have the best of luck in the straight. We will now be looking at the Windsor Forest Stakes at Ascot in June."

Poulains winner Silver Frost, slowly away, never looked dangerous and finished last but one, beaten nearly seven lengths.

Trainer Yves de Nicolay was not too disappointed with Silver Frost, who had undergone a knee operation since his last race in August.

He said: "Everything has been against him over the past nine months and I haven't been able to train him as I wanted to. He needed the race and we will now be looking at the Prix d'Ispahan."
