Simon de Montfort, Anna Salai win French classic preps for Godolphin

Godolphin could have a three-pronged assault for the European classics after wins on Sunday in a pair of group stakes at Longchamp.

In addition to Al Zir, a Stanjames.com Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) hopeful who races under the Godolphin banner with trainer Saeed bin Suroor, the stable’s Simon de Montfort probably will be aimed for the Prix du Jockey-Club (Fr-G1) (French Derby) after completing a last-to-first rally to win the $107,000 Prix la Force (Fr-G3) on Sunday.

Completing the trio of classics candidates is Anna Salai, a maiden who defeated French Group 1 winner Rosanara in the $107,000 Prix de la Grotte (Fr-G3) one race earlier on the card in a probable tuneup for the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Fr-G1) (French One Thousand Guineas).

Simon de Montfort launched a powerful rally from the back of the field into the straight and avoided trouble when jockey Mickael Barzalona angled him to the outside. The King’s Best colt collared pacesetter Pain Perdu to win by neck in 2:07.12 for 2,000 meters (9.94 furlongs) on turf rated as good.

Trained by Andre Fabre, Simon de Montfort entered off a win over Pain Perdu in the Prix Francois Mathet on April 4 at Saint-Cloud in his season bow. He won two of three starts as a two-year-old.

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford was impressed with the victory of Irish-bred Simon de Montfort, who was bred by Darley out the Caerleon mare Noble Rose.

“Simon de Montfort deserves to go to the French Derby [on June 6 at Chantilly] after that excellent performance,” he said. “I will talk over plans with Andre and we will decide what to do."

Late-running Anna Salai raced at the back of field early and bested longshot Gotlandia in the closing stages to win the Prix de la Grotte under Maxime Guyon. From the first crop of Irish classic winner Dubawi, the bay filly won by 1½ lengths.

The Aga Khan’s highly regarded Rosanara settled for third after leading inside the final furlong.

Kentucky-bred Anna Salai, who was bred by Darley out of the Group 3-winning Caerleon mare Anna Palariva (Ire), covered 1,600 meters (7.95 furlongs) in 1:38.33 while making her third career start for Fabre. The French One Thousand Guineas is set for May 16 at Longchamp.

Also on the card, the Aga Khan’s Rajsaman made all the pace and held off favored stablemate Siyouni to win the Prix de Fontainebleau (Fr-G3), a trial for the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Fr-G1) (French Two Thousand Guineas).

A stakes winner last season, Rajsaman covered 1,600 meters in 1:39.36 in his first start of 2010. Trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre, the Linamix colt out of the Lammtarra mare Rose Quartz will proceed to the Guineas on May 16 as will Group 1 winner Siyouni.

Report: France, Sunday
Longchamp: Prix La Force (Group 3) 1m2f, 3yo

SIMON DE MONTFORT came from last to first under Mickael Barzalona in this trial for the Prix du Jockey Club to give Andre Fabre and Godolphin a Group 3 double after Anna Salai landed the Prix De La Grotte.

Settled in rear as Pain Perdu led the field from Celtic Celeb for most of the race, Barzalona brought the 4.2-1 favourite down the outside of the field under a strong drive as they bunched inside the final furlong, catching the long-time leader asthe line approached to win by a neck.

The Paul Cole-trained Dante entry Circumvent was always close to the pace and stayed on gamely for third, three-quarters of a length behind Pain Perdu, as did Celtic Celeb a further head behind in fourth.

Godolphin's racing manager Simon Crisford was pleased and said: "It was a very good performance and the horse is engaged in the Prix du Jockey Club [French Derby]."

Winning jockey Barzalona added: "He's a horse you have to relax in a race, but he has a very good turn of foot."

Oliver Cole, assistant trainer of  Circumvent, said: "There was not enough pace. He will come on a lot for the race and was beaten by a very good horse."
